In order to categorize the stories into various sizes I’ve adopted the same standards as SWFA uses for their Nebula award classifications, but I’ve added two additional categories: Flash Fiction and Microfiction.

The word counts and classifications are as follows:

• Novel – Over 40,000 words
• Novella – 17,500 to 40,000 words
• Novelette – 7,500 to 17,500 words
• Short story – 1,000 to 7,500 words
• Flash fiction – 100 to 1,000 words
• Microfiction – Under 100 words

Short story collections don’t have a predefined word count, but they usually have 20,000 words or more.
